The “Ex Pastore” factory is in a sector of the city that has undergone a significant urban transformation over the last few years, bringing the Aurora district to the public eye as an example of urban liveliness. The original complex dates to 1927 when the Ettore Fautrero company builds its first industrial factory, overlooking via Perugia,to produce plywood. The factory was heavily damaged in the 1943 WWII bombings and was therefore reconstructed in 1950; in 1959 the new owner Benedetto Pastore enlarged the building and ten years afterwards asked for permission for the addition of a new floor.
The project, originated from collaboration between Mediapolis Engineering and Studio Picco Architetti, includes a combination of students’ hall of residence and public services covering 13.000 square meters on 3 levels. The original building is reinforced concrete, old and heavily tampered with during its life cycle, consequently requiring a full structural upgrade through evaluation of its seismic vulnerability and subsequent consolidation. At the same time, up-to-date state-of-the-art HVAC and electrical equipment were implemented in order to obtain high standards of energy efficiency for the “building+equipment” system
